As I listened to this entertaining and eye opening lecture my sons experience from reception to graduation from 6th from was going through my mind. Specifically what he used to say to me on a daily basis. At first he used to cry not to go, then when older he would verbalize it every day. What was he learning that would help him in his life? He already had decided never to be part of a nine to five business community and there for found many subjects a waste of time. I use to feed him with answers rather like the video. Work hard and you will get a good job. It seemed that school was getting in the way of his love of making a rock group. His grades were average although his abilities in music were very good he was able to sort out problems with leads instruments breakdowns under immense pressure of audiences waiting for his performance. Thinking on his feet improvising with cables and other instances where he handled people in French language all these instances he proved his knowledge and skills and ability to work with people and him self be a manager , yet the exams results were another story. He is not unruly in behavior he is calm but he is not focused in class time he is busy day dreaming other interesting things. However catch him on his mac book pro recording base or lead guitar and you can see him eyes closed with his headphones on lost in his creative exercise (not zoned out as in class)
It has caused chaos in our lives. By the way it cost a lot as well. The video mentioned that education is based on predicting economies and that this after the recession in fact at any time this is difficult to do. However wouldn’t we always need people in science and engineering as these are areas with much research going on at the prese nt time. The video highlighted the fact that what is being taught is not holding the attention span of students at least in north America. ADD seems to affect mostly boys (ref) could this mean they are the more brilliant ones and girls are more attentive to learning and classroom activities? How is the progression of this disorder in a country like India where education very largely follows the 18th century model due to the number of students. The alternatives mentioned to the factory system of school keeping different age groups depending on ability, group or even single student modes of learning would require a lot of resources and training of teachers and overhauling of curriculum. Now I know why the teachers at my children’s school have always told them to follow their passion in choosing what to learn, this at least takes the pressure off the teacher for creating interesting environments!
My daughter is 11 years old, she from a couple of years back asked and still asks why we go to school? My answers were you need to learn about things in life and later you have to get a good job that support you and what you would like to accomplish, she always answers me you can get all information needed from internet any time you want! I certainly know that education these days is a challenge to students, teachers & parents too, the methods has to be changed, I agree to what Sir Ken Robinson say, social and economy are factors that affects education but we should give a chance to our children to experiment what they like, but is this enough to have a suitable way of living that they want? May be schools have to have a system of categorizing students according to their passion and what they are good at, and let them focus on basics of Math if they don’t like math for instant, or history…but in my opinion they must know at early stage what they are good at and what basics they have to know from other subjects to keep them interested. And not lose interest in education and schools. My daughter loves the school because she meets her friends and only science subject for now is what she is interested in only.
I loved this video, but the part that shows declining in student's ability comes up in my reading of the "how people learn" book where it describes the formation of loads of new synapses at birth which the baby loses by the age 2 in some areas of the brain, or at age of 8 in other areas. Could this also contributes to the decline in abilities ? this is one view. The other fact mentioned in the book that once this acquisition and loss of synapses end by those ages mentioned above, addition of more synapses and maitenance of existing ones depends on experience and social interaction. This view agrees with the video. Thank you Taja for sharing this

i like this video very much. Not only it well presented, I can concur with changing paradigms in education.
